The 5 W’s (& 1 H) of Teaching

To disciple means to teach and I wanted to look at what the Bible has to say about teaching. First some of the verses that I learned from:

Leviticus 10:11 (KJV) And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.

Deuteronomy 4:9 (KJV) Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;

Deuteronomy 6:7 (KJV) And thou shalt teach them [vs6. these words, which I command thee this day] diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Matthew 5:19 (KJV) Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 28:19 (KJV) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Acts 5:42 (KJV) And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 4:17 (KJV) For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.

Isaiah 54:13 (KJV) And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

Proverbs 1:8 (KJV) My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

Proverbs 19:20-21 (KJV) Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

1 Corinthians 3:11 (KJV) For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

And my personal favorite!
Psalms 78:6-7 (KJV) 6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: 7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

Who? Teach our children, and our grandchildren, everyone…all nations

What? The Lord’s statutes and commandments; preach Jesus Christ and his ways; foundation in Jesus Christ

When? Daily, never ceasing, 24 hours a day…when you sit, when you walk, when you lie down, when you rise up

Where? Everywhere, every church, every house

Why? Reward in heaven; peace of our children; gain wisdom; so our children will set their hope in God, not forget the works of God, and keep his commandments; so even the children yet to be born will know Him

How? By talking, declaring

Sometimes I feel quite overwhelmed by the job! …every minute, every hour, of every day, everywhere I go, everyone I see… and I have to remind myself of these verses:

Isaiah 40:31 (KJV) But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Galatians 6:9 (KJV) And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
